Lauren K The Bling Ring was incredibly repetitive for the majority of the movie. It was a repeat cycle for what felt like an hour of watching a handful of annoying kids breaking into a house, gawking at all the clothes and shoes, leaving, partying and doing drugs, and then doing it all over again. The characters are all incredibly hatable despite the (mostly) shallow attempts to make you feel bad for them. (In my opinion, the only one that should receive sympathy is Marc. He just ended up with the wrong crowd.) There are some scenes that give better insight into what the kids are like and the details of their relationships with one another (the most significant of which is Rebecca and Marc) but there are far less than enough to give that much depth to the characters.However, despite the aggravatingly repetitive story and occasional hard-to-watch scenes, the movie can be great at some parts at a cinematography standpoint. The contrast of low key lighting and high key lighting to create extreme contrast between the kids’ daily lives and their lives of crime was interesting. I loved the scene of Rebecca and Marc robbing one of the houses that had an ongoing wide shot of the entire house; it was really stressful. If you can put aside the annoying comments from the annoying teen girls, a lot of the robbing scenes in the movie were interesting to watch along with being very stressful and overall well put together. I also really enjoyed the documentary-like format and the use of computer screens being used as a shot, photo collages/slideshows, etc. One of my favorite choices made was using camera footage as shots of the kids running around the house or leaving; it really built tension.Overall, the movie is very well put together from a cinematography standpoint and includes several unique kinds of shots and scenes that create a great visual experience. However, if you want to watch a movie that has a good, engaging story, don’t waste your time with this. The burglary shots were dragged on excessively with unnecessary conversations that killed any suspense. The characters are barely relatable and the only times where you actually feel any sympathy for the characters is during a very small number of close up shots on mark. But character development wise, mark was the only character that had any conscience and all the other characters were so incredibly dislikable that you would hope for a satisfying ending. It was kinda slow at some points but over all it was fine. I thought the cinematography was very good from switching shots to a documentary format and through the lens of security cameras. I thought that it touched on interesting themes, but I think the movie should have dug a little deeper into the characters' true motivations for wanting to rob the homes. Many of the scenes throughout the film were repetitive, in terms of what the teens were doing in the homes, but I thought the various camera angles during the different scenes made the movie visually appealing.
